When a young man, attending college in Cambridge, Massachusetts, I often went to The Mother Church for morning services, and it was during this time that I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It lay among my books for seventeen years before I dug it out and began the serious study of its pages. This was ten years ago, and since then it has been my daily companion.
It was my wife, who at that time was not a Scientist, who proposed that I take up the study of this subject. I was not ill, but the so-called depression had started me worrying. Christian Science healed me of this, and, in the years that followed, of constipation and frequent headaches, which had occurred at intervals from early youth. Likewise members of my family received many wonderful healings. Today my wife and three children are ardent students of this great religion, and all of them except the youngest, who attends the Christian Science Sunday School, are members of The Mother Church and a branch church.
Once, during the time, I was out of employment. I did not have a dollar with which to pay any of my bills. The grocery bill, the rent, the utility bills, and so forth, were a month or more overdue, and the outlook was very dark and discouraging. Thanksgiving was only a day or two away. My wife, our children, and I had worked, as we are taught in Christian Science, patiently and consistently. We knew that God cares for His children, that we are, in reality, His children, and that His ideas or children are never without supply. The truth of this was beautifully demonstrated. A friend, who apparently knew nothing of my problem, and with whom I had never had any business dealings, voluntarily offered to lend me some money. It was truly a Thanksgiving—we were thankful to God for His bountiful supply. A few days later a position was offered to me through which I was able to repay the loan and pay all my other bills.
