"Fed by Thy love"

In a letter to a First Reader, to be found in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 247), our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, wrote, "It is not a stern but a loving look which brings forth mankind to receive your bestowal,—not so much eloquence as tender persuasion that takes away their fear, for it is Love alone that feeds them."

What is it that attracts thousands to the Christian Science services on Sundays and Wednesdays? It is not severity, but kindness; it is not harshness, but tenderness; it is the love of Love that draws them. It was an unselfish affection for mankind on the part of Mrs. Eddy, which prompted the founding of the Christian Science church, and the same unselfish affection should fill the thought of those performing their duties at the services.

Perhaps these seekers come with the desire to be healed of physical, financial, or moral problems. Basically, however, it is the hungering and thirsting after righteousness and goodness which brings them; and as Jesus said, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled."
