Christian Science came to me in answer to prayer, when...

Christian Science came to me in answer to prayer, when my mental outlook was very dark and the religion in which I had been reared seemed inadequate. I asked God for help; I am grateful that in my need I knew that He alone could bring me peace.

Very shortly thereafter I was invited to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a near-by Christian Science church. I knew nothing whatever about this religion, but I was much impressed by the testimonies. I accepted the sincerity of the speakers, and I knew that they had something of which I was in great need. We began to attend the services, placed our daughter in the Sunday school, and subscribed to The Christian Science Monitor.

Soon I made inquiries about the book which was used with the Bible at all services, and was directed to a Christian Science Reading Room to purchase the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of the movement. I was impressed by the love and patience of the Librarian, who showed me how to study the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, and answered my many questions, always referring me to Mrs. Eddy's writings for my answers. I shall never cease being grateful for her manifest joy in serving.

Prior to this I had had a major operation, which had left me with bad attacks of pain and great suffering; these took place at least once a year and sometimes oftener. This condition materia medica had never been able to alleviate, although I had the care of the best physicians and surgeons at all times.

I was awakened one morning with all the symptoms of a dreaded disease. I visited a practitioner, who consented to help me. In three days' time I was completely and permanently healed of the difficulty. This occurred many years ago. It was a proof of God's care of His children that I was led to an alert, loyal worker, who early called my attention to the Leader of the Christian Science movement, Mrs. Eddy, and to the gratitude we should feel for her integrity of purpose in giving this wonderful truth to the world.

Many physical healings were accomplished in our home, and a marvelous protection experienced in the business world. A serious case of smallpox which my daughter had was healed quickly and no scars remained. A compound fracture of the forearm was healed; there was no swelling or pain, and my daughter remained in school right along. A dislocated ankle joint which occurred while she was playing volleyball was healed; the snap was distinctly audible to the other players. She was brought home on crutches with the ankle bandaged, but she refused any medical applications. She talked to the practitioner, who told her that God was her only support. On going into her room an hour later I saw that the bandages and crutches had been discarded. The following week she played in a match game of volleyball to the amazement of her fellow players and the school nurse, who gave her a thorough examination before allowing her to enter the game. The nurse was present when the accident occurred, and was very gracious in acknowledging this as a splendid proof of the healing.

I was also healed of a serious case of pneumonia when it seemed that each breath would be my last; the difficulty of breathing was such that it seemed necessary to call the practitioner again to destroy the fear. The message came back, "Sit up and sing hymns." The mesmerism was instantly broken, for I saw that this clear worker was perceiving the perfect man. Struggling to a sitting position, I began to sing, and was instantly freed.

Christian Science was the answer to my earnest prayer; it has changed my life completely; all I owe to Mrs. Eddy is mine to repay in the years to come. We acknowledge before the world our appreciation of our Leader's spirituality, intuition, fearlessness, and attainment. I thank God for Christian Science.—(Mrs.)Gertrude Y. Weller, Los Angeles, California.
