"And we solemnly promise"

All who would become members of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, or of a branch church, must subscribe to the Tenets of The Mother Church. These Tenets close the chapter entitled "Recapitulation" in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and are also to be found in the Manual of The Mother Church (pp. 15, 16). The Tenets summarize briefly the important points in the teachings of Christian Science. An understanding of them is vital to the growth of every student of this Science.

The sixth and last tenet is as follows: "And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure." What a glorious privilege and sacred obligation have those who take the name of Christian Scientist!

It is significant that here we are asked to make a promise. With her characteristic thoroughness Mrs. Eddy intensifies the word "promise" with the word "solemnly." She says, "We solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus." This spiritual standard was primarily set before us by Paul in his letter to the Philippians when he said, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."
