"His disciples went down unto the sea"

Doubtless they spoke with wonderment and joy
As they went down the rugged path
To take ship for Capernaum,
For they had witnessed mighty works that day;
Perhaps they questioned, as they went,
Their Master's wish to stay alone upon the mountain;
Already it was night, they must depart;

When they had rowed awhile in darkness
A great wind swept the sea. We may be sure
The hearts of some were stayed by thoughts of him,
And some were wishing for his presence there;
But even as they strove against the fear
Of darkness, wind, and wave,
They saw him coming to them—
Walking on the sea.

Today as then the Christ is here
To still the tempest of our fears,
To heal our grief and lead us to the mount
Where Jesus found refreshment
When men would make him king—by force.
Give us, O God, a fuller faith,
More trusting heart, more ready ear,
That we may hear above the tempter's voice
Those Christly words, "Be not afraid."
