Many years ago, when I was in much distress over a very painful condition of one of my eyes, my sister spoke to me of Christian Science, which had greatly benefited her. I instantly accepted a scientific statement which she made, and was completely and permanently healed. This experience opened up a new line of thinking to me. I borrowed the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and every minute I could spare was spent in its perusal. The instantaneous healing I had received, together with some understanding of the convincing statements in the book, caused me to take my stand for metaphysical healing. At that date Christian Science was not nearly so well known as it is now, and one who openly professed it was often severely criticized. Therefore, since I was the wife of a successful and quite prominent physician, this step presented a problem which was solved only by years of willing patience, prayer, courage, loving-kindness, and wisdom from above.
With a family of children I found ample opportunity to put what I learned from the textbook into practice, and I never made the effort in vain. I am thankful, not only for the quick healings of many discords through the application of God's law, but also for the better understanding of the Bible that I gained. It enabled me in those early years to give my small children the benefit of my study.
One afternoon I was said to be in a critical condition from blood poisoning, with no hope of recovery. With the little knowledge of Christian Science I then had, and the help of my sister, this condition was met and mastered within a few hours. On another occasion a friend and I were in the bay swimming on a windy, rough day. I was knocked down by the heavy waves, and became unconscious. When our friends on the beach had despaired of seeing me come up again, this friend found me and raised me to the surface. I regained consciousness, and the first thing I remembered was what I had said to myself as I stepped into the water that morning: "God's love, like this water, is all around and about us." I am confident that the truth underlying these words sustained me, even though I was unconscious of my material surroundings. No unpleasant results followed, and I kept a luncheon engagement a short while afterwards.
