Endurance

Neither the Founder of Christianity nor the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science gave any indication that qualities of endurance would not be needed by those who put Truth first in their lives. Immeasurable as are the peace and benediction, certain as is the reward for those who take the side of Spirit, the challenge to evil calls for courage, for fidelity, for self-surrender. In this warfare, however, Christ Jesus gave full assurance of its final outcome. "He that shall endure unto the end," he declared, "the same shall be saved."

"The end"! The only thing to which there can be an end is error. The only thing that is certain of endurance is Truth. Those who understand this know that, because of man's eternal unity with Principle, by their very refusal to submit to evil they are already helping to precipitate its end. That which makes men give up the conflict and resign themselves to evil is the belief that there will be an end to good, to the things they hold most dear, to health and freedom, peace and good will; that there will be an endless continuation of the things which make for sorrow, for despair, disease and suffering, tyranny and fear.

In speaking of those who have carried through great undertakings, demanding endurance far in excess of their ordinary capacities, Mary Baker Eddy has written on page 385 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "The explanation lies in the support which they derived from the divine law, rising above the human."
