My real interest in Christian Science began after I had experienced a healing which came about before I knew anything of the healing truth.

In 1901, through the ignorant use of carbolic acid, my left foot was burned to such an extent that the cords running to the smaller toes were contracted so that the toes were out of their normal position. The wound, which extended entirely around the foot, was only partially healed.

During 1924 the foot became unusually troublesome, and to all appearances gangrene had developed, together with blood poisoning, which extended to the knee; and it was with extreme difficulty that I was able to be about my daily duties. About this time my wife became interested in Christian Science. Shortly afterwards, she decided to visit a practitioner for the first time, but before departing asked me if she should tell the practitioner about my foot. In order to encourage her I told her that she might do so; but I believed that the practitioner could do me neither good nor harm, since I was not to be present.
