Some years ago, when I was sick and discouraged, I purchased the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Not being able to grasp the author's point of view, because of my bigotry and narrow-mindedness, I closed it, saying, "It is not for me."

Quiet reflection made me realize that I should try to understand that part of the volume called "Key to the Scriptures." The Bible reference (p. 501), "And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob by the name of God Almighty; but by My name Jehovah was I not known to them.—EXODUS," caused me to see why I had failed. I had only the nationalistic, material, tribal, personal sense of God. I read six pages, and found much enlightenment in this sentence (p. 507): "Creation is ever appearing, and must ever continue to appear from the nature of its inexhaustible source." Beginning to read the textbook anew with this thought, I found I understood in some measure and agreed with every word. In my first effort I had made numerous notes and had put down Bible quotations, even intending to write to Mrs. Eddy and tell her of contradictions of the Bible text. Now, through my new understanding, I saw that these very quotations supported the statements in Science and Health.

This experience might be described thus: I had been enjoying the form and beauty of a wonderful structure from the outside. It was closed and locked. I was given a key, used it, and found myself enjoying the structure from the inside. All that I had before was still there, but more had come into view. I had found my way into an understanding of Life eternal. Knowing God and Christ, I found a new heaven and a new earth; a realm of Mind, not matter; of Spirit, not of flesh.
