A healing of astigmatism first proved to my mother the practicality of Christian Science. She immediately placed me in a Christian Science Sunday School, and I cannot be grateful enough that I grew up in an ever-unfolding knowledge of this religion of Love and of demonstrable Science.
Never once has a member of our family turned to God, as we are taught to do in Christian Science, for healing or guidance, and not found the answer to his need. Christian Science has helped me more often as a preventive than as a curative means, but I have been healed of mumps, colds, and Spanish influenza, and have experienced an instantaneous healing of measles. I should like to tell of the experience with influenza.
We were visiting in New York City during the summer of 1918, at the height of the influenza epidemic. When I became ill, the friends with whom we were staying seemed terror-stricken and insisted on going for a doctor. My mother, still young in the study of Science, and feeling very much alone, knelt by my bed and asked for guidance in meeting this problem. As she prayed, these lines from our Leader's beautiful hymn (Poems by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 12) came to her as clearly as if they had been spoken:
