Christian Science has brought me countless blessings, for...
Christian Science has brought me countless blessings, for which I am truly grateful. It has solved mental, physical, financial, and social problems for me and for the rest of my family. One of these demonstrations, which took place when I was a child, was the instantaneous healing of spinal meningitis, which was said to be incurable. My parents had worked faithfully for me with what they knew of Christian Science, but my condition appeared to grow steadily worse. Finally, I lapsed into a coma. After I had been unconscious for a number of hours, my mother went to a house several blocks away to call a practitioner. When she returned home, less than half an hour later, she found me, not in my bed, but outdoors, dressed and playing with other children.
During the years I was enrolled in Sunday school I learned enough of the truth to turn to it naturally in time of need. One day, when I was seventeen years old, the redhot lid of a stove slipped, and fell on my hand. I withdrew my hand without looking at it, and, instead of calling for help, repeated "the scientific statement of being," which is given on page 468 of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. Then I forgot about the incident. Later I saw that my hand had been severely burned, but not once during the whole experience did I feel any pain or fear. The burn healed rapidly, and the scar finally disappeared.
This was my most outstanding application of Christian Science until I joined a Christian Science college organization several years later. There I discovered that I could apply the truth in all my problems. The lessons I learned at that time, the experience I gained on committees and in other activities, and, above all, the firm, steadfast foundation of an understanding of Christian Science which all this brought me, have been invaluable. This understanding enabled me, in a philosophy class, to distinguish between the fallacies of human reasoning and the unchanging truth of Christian Science. I learned to detect the difference between mesmeric human personality and true individuality, which is the expression of spiritual qualities.
