Thousands can testify that Christian Science has illumined...

Lowestoft Mercury

Thousands can testify that Christian Science has illumined the Bible for them, and made it a veritable guide for daily living. The Scriptures are a record of a constantly improving concept of God, from the Hebrew concept of a tribal deity to the sublime revelation of God as Father, which Christ Jesus gave to the world. Truly, the infinite cannot be expressed in human language, but such synonyms for God as Mind, Spirit, Life, Love, as used by the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, in her writings, have helped to give a clearer concept of Deity to hundreds of thousands. But Mrs. Eddy's writings also contain many references to God as the loving Father of all, to the Holy Spirit, and to the new birth.

We have no record in the Bible that Jesus or his disciples used any means of healing but the spiritual, and it is a well-attested fact that for over three hundred years the early church practiced healing by spiritual means. After this, spiritual healing of physical ailments fell into disuse, owing to loss of spirituality in the church. It was revived through the teachings of Christian Science, for the benefit of all mankind, in the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, on page 2 of "Rudimental Divine Science" Mrs. Eddy writes: "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science. It is only the bugle-call to thought and action, in the higher range of infinite goodness. The emphatic purpose of Christian Science is the healing of sin."

When Christian Science declares that man is perfect, it needs to be clearly understood what is meant by this statement. This point is made clear by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," on page 346: "When man is spoken of as made in God's image, it is not sinful and sickly mortal man who is referred to, but the ideal man, reflecting God's likeness."
