Clothed in Righteousness
In Christian Science we are taught that thoughts express themselves in action. Therefore, if we wish to manifest a normal, happy, and healthy sense of existence, we must guard our thinking and see that no evil is allowed to enter or abide in our consciousness. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, makes this plain in "Miscellaneous Writings," where, speaking of "the spirit of Truth cleansing from all sin," she says (p. 204): "By purifying human thought, this state of mind permeates with increased harmony all the minutiæ of human affairs. It brings with it wonderful foresight, wisdom, and power; it unselfs the mortal purpose, gives steadiness to resolve, and success to endeavor."
Many times, as a young girl, the writer was puzzled over the story concerning Joseph and his coat of many colors, especially over the seeming partiality shown to Joseph by his father. Having twelve sons, why should Jacob bestow this special favor on Joseph? This question was beautifully answered, many years later, through the spiritual understanding which came as a result of her study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. It was seen that this bestowal of favoritism was due to the recognition of the love and goodness which characterized Joseph's thinking. Because of their coldness, indifference, and selfishness, his brothers did not behold these pure qualities in their younger brother. However, this could not prevent the true reward of right thinking and well-doing, even though the spirituality manifested by him aroused, in the materially-minded brothers, envy, jealousy, and hatred.
While in reality there was no cause for rivalry, each one having God-given ability to express the divine qualities, the brothers were not aware of the fact. Regardless of their treatment, Joseph's thinking was kind, not critical or resentful. The love and goodness which he freely expressed to his father, he also expressed to his brothers, even while they conspired against him and with malicious cunning deceived their father.
