"Be not afraid"

THE profound and startling statement of Christ Jesus, together with the proofs he offered of its truth, "I and my Father are one," establishes the perfect and irresistible way in which fear must and can be overcome. Does not Mary Baker Eddy say in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 411), "The procuring cause and foundation of all sickness is fear, ignorance, or sin"? Obviously, then, in order to heal sickness it is necessary to overcome fear. Jesus did this through his understanding of man's oneness with the Father.

Adhering to the basic truth of Christian Science, the truth of monotheism — one God — each of us can understand that "I and my Father are one." As our Leader says (ibid., p. 476), "In divine Science, God and the real man are inseparable as divine Principle and idea." Certainly God, the cause and creator of all, cannot be afraid.

Our great Master admonished those who came to him for healing, "Be not afraid," and, "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." He must have known, better than anyone else, that fear is largely the basis of sin and sickness, failure and poverty, and all other abnormal conditions.
