True Allegiance

Lofty allegiance to country, to church, to a cause, to family, friends, ambitions, is one of the deepest motivating influences in human experience. And although it has inspired countless high endeavors, it has also started some of the most destructive currents of events; for allegiance to a wrong cause is obviously adherence to evil.

On page 226 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has written: "Human codes, scholastic theology, material medicine and hygiene, fetter faith and spiritual understanding. Divine Science rends asunder these fetters, and man's birthright of sole allegiance to his Maker assert itself." So we see that true allegiance is allegiance to God alone.

The nature of God is discernible by all those who study the Scriptures in the light of Christian Science. Jesus stated that "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." And Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 465), "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." We see, therefore, that true allegiance is allegiance to Spirit, not to matter. We also see that the choice between true and false allegiance confronts every student of Christian Science.
