Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

The daily and weekly press are the principal vehicles of public opinion which we have to watch. The three weekly papers published in the English language in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo have been consistently friendly in their attitude toward our movement, and during the year under review printed nothing unjust or misleading regarding Christian Science. On the contrary, the Anglo-Brazilian Chronicle and the Times of Brazil both published a notice of the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church, while the Brazilian-American receives the Monitor by arrangement with the Rio de Janeiro Society, and has expressed its keen appreciation of our great daily newspaper. Articles are occasionally quoted or reprinted with acknowledgment to the Monitor.

A further reference to a certain book adverse to Mrs. Eddy in its Portuguese edition appeared in some papers, and in this connection it is interesting to record that a cultured Brazilian is known to have purchased Science and Health and other authorized literature from one of the societies as a direct result of reading this book, thus undertaking to investigate Mrs. Eddy's teachings for himself.

Committees on Publication may, with the authority of the Board of Directors of The Mother Church, address groups of non-Scientists who desire to be accurately informed on the teaching and practice of Christian Science. A request of this nature was received from a group of young people in Sao Paulo, and after consulting the Directors the Assistant Committee in that city was authorized to give the desired address. About fifteen people attended the meeting, all of whom appreciated the talk and took away literature which had been provided for distribution in either the English, French, or German language.
