When I knew nothing of Christian Science I was an inveterate cigarette smoker and depended on smoking to give me the power to make decisions.

In the spring of 1936 I attended a Christian Science lecture on "The Science of Harmonious Being." Some days later I heard the same lecture again. Through the realization of what was said at this lecture—that "health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 120)—I was instantaneously freed from this evil and have never again had any desire for tobacco or alcoholic drinks. What our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says so beautifully in Science and Health became clear and understandable to me: "Our false views of matter perish as we grasp the facts of Spirit" (p. 281). "There is no inherent power in matter" (p. 282). "All is infinite Mind" (p. 468).

We thus learn to see in Science that all false beliefs lack cause or Principle, and therefore cannot exist. We have only to gain the right standpoint from which to proceed.
