Christian Science practitioners do not diagnose diseases, or prescribe material remedies or foods. They rely wholly on spiritual prayer as defined in the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

In this book Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 1), "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."

For many years Christian Scientists have healed all manner of sickness, including functional and organic disorders, by spiritual prayer alone. In fact, Christian Science has healed many individuals suffering from so-called incurable diseases, who were given up as hopeless cases by medical doctors.
