Spiritualizing Our Consciousness

On page 587 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy gives a definition of God which, when rightly understood, helps us to spiritualize our consciousness. It reads: "God. The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence." It is indeed a wonderful definition of God.

Since God is "the all-knowing Mind" (ibid., p. 187), we can really know only that which is Godlike. We are conscious of His presence in the thoughts or ideas that come to us through spiritual sense, which sense Mrs. Eddy says "is a conscious, constant capacity to understand God." Continuing, she adds that spiritual sense "shows the superiority of faith by works over faith in words" (Science and Health, pp. 209, 210). Then what is more necessary for humanity than to gain in spiritual understanding, and to utilize the spiritually mental qualities which bless ourselves and others?

Through intelligent appreciation of the teachings of Christ Jesus, including the Golden Rule, we are enabled to realize the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. Adherence to the understanding of Truth eliminates fear, doubt, or any erroneous thought which would try to confuse us or separate us or God. Christian Science teaches that evil in all its seeming forms is unreal—nothing. It may seem real at times; but it has neither reality nor power. Jesus proved this conclusively, and the Christian Scientist also has the joy of proving this. He is thus ever alert, knowing that in order to realize harmony he must possess and utilize spiritual understanding.
