Divine Energy

True energy emanates from Spirit, God, and is eternally represented in the consciousness of spiritual man. This divine and purposeful energy is allied to wisdom, strength, and peace. In "Retrospection and Introspection" (p. 30) Mrs. Eddy refers to "the invincible and infinite energies of Truth and Love, as contrasted with the foibles and fables of finite mind and material existence." These spiritual energies are entirely separate from the counterfeit energy of mortal mind, which is subject to misdirection, overaction, and reaction.

Previous to his conversion, Paul was deceived into carrying on his persecution of the early Christian with defiant energy. But when, as he relates, "it pleased God ... to reveal his Son in me," spiritual illumination came to him, and the futile self-will which formerly misgoverned him subsided. Thenceforth Paul's spiritually energetic labors on behalf of the early Christians were constructive and protective.

In Christian Science spiritual energy is enlisted on the side of health, and is characterized by the spirit of compassion and redemption. Deep comfort speaks in the following statement by our Leader: "Christian Science silences human will, quiets fear with Truth and Love, and illustrates the unlabored motion of the divine energy in healing the sick" (Science and Health, p. 445). Our reflection of divine energy causes us to follow perseveringly the course of action pointed out by divine Principle, and this multiplies our faith in the right so that we may never "be weary in well doing." Health is never truly established through the old fitful energy which concerns itself with changes of remedies, climate, diet, and so forth. Health is recovered and made permanent in Christian Science through the understanding that it is spiritual, always reflected in spiritual man, and always inseparable from God, its source and sustainer.
