"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you...

"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." This is one of the most scientific, most simple statements that Jesus made. If one will obey his admonition, it will bring to that one freedom from bondage, whatsoever the bondage may seem to be.

Over a period of several years I was under a cloud through fear of cancer, which seemed to cause the disease to develop. I suffered day and night; the pain was so intense that I could not sleep, so I would rise and walk the floor. One night this thought came to me: When I rise and walk the floor, I am obeying and serving mortal mind. I am believing what thousands of mortal minds are believing—that the disease has more power than God has. I do not have to change my position physically to realize the truth that makes one free. I need to rise spiritually and face this error, and see its powerlessness—its utter unreality.

Since my mother had passed on from the same ailment, I took up the belief of heredity. I studied Mrs. Eddy's definition of "Mother" on page 592 of Science and Health, which says: "Mother. God; divine and eternal Principle; Life, Truth, and Love." Then I realized I could not inherit anything but good, and since all good is from God, divine Principle, it is eternal. Because God is the first and only cause, His ideas are expressed in Life, Truth, and Love. Then I carefully studied the definitions given in the Glossary of Science and Health, such as those of Adam, Eve, Fear, and Dan. These definitions showed me clearly the unreality of mortal mind's belief. Heredity, as fear, was overcome; the pain ceased to be.
