"Ye are the salt of the earth"

When our Master, Christ Jesus, gave his great teaching in what is called the Sermon on the Mount, he emphasized God's invariable and unfailing love for His children, and the necessity for the application of this teaching to human needs. Similarly, the truth revealed by Mrs. Eddy to this age through Christian Science, when understood and utilized, never fails to comfort and bless. Christian Science reveals that all problems, whether physical, moral, social, economic, national, or international, may be solved through obedience to divine law, which is positive, instantly available, and adequate to meet every situation.

A verse from Jesus' sermon, understood in the light of Christian Science, reveals the comprehensiveness of the lessons designed to benefit mankind. As recorded in Matthew, he said, "Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men." A dictionary defines "salt," partly, as "that which preserves or purifies;" also, as "that which gives ... flavor." Here we see two distinct and important meanings for salt, in that it preserves and gives flavor.

As Christian Scientists, then, what are we to preserve? Is it not God-given qualities, such as honesty, integrity, and service in our business affairs; kindness, patience, unselfishness, and love in our homes; humility, tolerance, forgiveness, and compassion among our neighbors and friends? In other words, we are to preserve the Christ-spirit in our everyday experiences.
