In the spring of 1926 I suffered from an earache, which was so painful and persistent that I did not get any sleep for two weeks. At the time I was in deplorable economic circumstances, being a widow with two small children to support, and not a dollar in the world. This lack and my feeling keenly the responsibility of bringing up my two children alone, brought on my illness. Every day for the two weeks I swallowed a half dozen aspirin pills, but obtained no relief. I felt that if this kept up I should lose my sanity.

I had a sister who lived out of town, and in desperation I called her and told her of my predicament. She said that she had a friend who was a Christian Science practitioner, and that she would try to get in touch with her. When she told me to try to get some sleep I cried, "I have tried for two weeks to sleep, but I can't lie down, I can't stand up, I can't do anything!"

In the meanwhile, a neighbor took me to a professor who was willing to examine me. After seeing my ear, he said I must have an operation, since I had a very bad case of mastoid infection. I wept bitterly. I had seen the result of such operations, and I did not want that, because I was afraid it would keep me from swimming—a sport I love dearly.
