Work

To be happily, usefully, and profitably employed should rightly be accounted one of our greatest blessings. Worthy work, well done, brings a satisfaction which can be won in no other way. Such work not only is an antidote for idleness, sloth, inertia, but also promotes and contributes to one's peace of mind, harmony, and contentment. From his early youth, Jesus recognized the value and vital importance of holy work. At the tender age of twelve years, when he was found in the temple and questioned by his mother as to the of his absence, he gave this keen and impressively alert reply: "How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?"

As in all other matters touching daily needs, Christian Science affords helpful instruction and information on this subject of universal significance—namely, occupation, activity. In referring to the practical manner in which Christian Science is leavening thought, Mary Baker Eddy makes this enlightening comment in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 166): "This action of the divine energy, even if not acknowledged, has come to be seen as diffusing richest blessings. This spiritual idea, or Christ, entered into the minutiæ of the life of the personal Jesus. It made him an honest man, a good carpenter, and a good man, before it could make him the glorified."

No legitimate task should be considered too trivial, too insignificant, or too lowly to warrent our best efforts, for in the successful performance of simple duties we becoem better fitted to fill higher and more responsible positions. Christian Science teaches us that man, being the perfect and perpetual likeness of God, divine Mind, infinite intelligence, constantly and consciously reflects Spirit, in efficiency, resourcefulness, and strength.
