"Unto the clouds"

"Thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds."—Psalms 36:5.

Earth has donned her somber robes, weeping the hours away;
Day is bedraggled, deluged, drear; storm—clouds and winds hold sway;
Mountains befogged 'neath misty veil; in valleys the waving grain
And beauty that walks in garden plots, lie trampled and drenched with rain.

Yet can the hearts of men rejoice, refuse earth's mood to share,
Confident she will be reclothed in garments fresh and fair.
Sunlight will reach unto the clouds which seem to frown awhile,
Will pierce their gloom, and dry earth's tears with an irradiant smile.

Unto the clouds Thy faithfulness, O God, doth ever reach.
What though the clouds of fear may lower, and winds of error screech;
Though mountains of Thy righteousness from tear-drenched eyes seem veiled;
Though inspiration is laid low, beauty and joy have paled,
Still can this heart of mine rejoice—to share earth's mood refuse;
Until, reclothed in robes of praise, resplendent with faith's hues,
I know, O God, unto the clouds doth reach Thy faithfulness,
And that the sunlight of Thy love will heal, revive, and bless.
