In the mid eighteen-eighties, a student of Mrs. Eddy's introduced Christian Science to Atlanta, Georgia, and among those who were healed through her work was one who was to bring to our family the remarkable healing power of this religion. The glimpse that came to us at that time seemed to be obscured for a while, but two healings were permanent.
An aunt had suffered for years from the effects of a sprained ankle. Whenever she put aside crutches, it would be sprained again. In this condition she went to see the one who had been healed, and who had begun to help others. This practitioner took my aunt's crutches and placed them across the room. After a few minutes of silent prayer, the practitioner told the patient to come to her, but the latter refused. This was repeated with the same result. Upon being told for the third time to arise and walk, my aunt stood up and said, "I can't walk without crutches, and I'll show you that I can't." Starting to walk, she found her ankle entirely strong, and she walked with wonder and rejoicing.
So great was her enthusiasm that she joyfully told my mother, who had been very ill for several years, that the priceless pearl which would heal her had been found. Absent treatment was given by the same practitioner, and my mother was restored to health and happiness. In a short time a child was born to her, and the birth was harmonious and painless.
