Advocate
Christian Science is established throughout the civilized world, having church organizations in more than forty countries. So the word "sect" does not apply to this worldwide religion. Christian Science does, however, include healing in its ministry, though, as with Jesus and the apostles, the healing of physical ailments is not the primary consideration. In her book "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 2), Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, answers the question, "Is healing the sick the whole of Science?" and says, "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science." She adds, "The emphatic purpose of Christian Science is the healing of sin."
Many times, when Jesus healed either sickness or sin, the Pharisees opposed him and sought to harm him. For instance, Matthew records that when the Master healed a man's withered hand, "then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him." There is no doubt that Jesus' healing activity, on the Sabbath and on other days, inflamed the jealousy and hatred that eventually, on one pretext or another, brought about the crucifixion. But the Master's understanding of man's unity with God enabled him to triumph over even that experience.
Christian Scientists accept Christ Jesus' admonitory promise, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." They demonstrate that, in proportion to one's understanding of Christ, Truth, do signs follow. The healing of physical sickness is not the whole, but is an essential part, of the Christ Science.
