My Inheritance

It seemed a desert place in which I stood—
Distressed, alone, discouraged, ill with fear.
I felt so far away from all things good,
It seemed that Love could never reach me there.
My tattered rags of self-esteem and pride
Clung to me, even on this barren ground.
Then error raised its clamorous voice to say,
"Serve me! For in such service joy is found."

Then the dear, gentle voice of Truth spoke low
Such words of comfort to my waiting heart:
"Not error's child, doomed to distress and woe,
But child of God you are, and stand apart
From want and limitation, grief and fear.
All good is yours. It is your rightful dower.
Your needs are met." So clothed anew by Love
I realized that God alone has power.

Then I stepped forth unfettered, unafraid,
In garments new of humbleness and praise;
And walking in the cool and and restful shade
Of that great rock of Truth, in pleasant ways,
My feet well shod with gospel-peace and love,
I heard my Father's voice, beloved, divine,
"Son, thou art ever with me." Words of cheer
And blessed assurance, "All I have is thine."
