When Christian Science was first presented to me by a friend I was sick and very despondent, and this cup of cold water given in Christ's name was received with joy. The explanation of it seemed very beautiful, especially when the goodness and power of God were mentioned, but matter seemed a mystery. After my children had gone to school I would kneel down to pray, alone with God, not to be heard of men, but of God. I prayed fervently for guidance and healing.
The doctors were doing me no good, and when I finally reached the point where I could say, "Thy will be done, not mine; heal me in Thy way," my friend brought Christian Science to my notice. Her little boy had been healed. I bought the books and began to study in earnest. I believed the Bible to be true and that the trouble was all with us—that we needed to do His will and pray aright. One day I knelt pleading for more truth than I was using. A voice seemed to say to me, "He who is immutably right will do right without being reminded of His province" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 3). I stopped, rose to my feet, and pondered this truth, asking God to teach me how to pray.
I had been in a generally run-down condition, and my ailments were many. Doctors claimed that one lung was in a very bad condition. I also had liver trouble. I had treatment from a Christian Science practitioner, but the reading of Science and Health seemed to do the work. I said, I want this beautiful truth even if I am never healed physically. I was hungering and thirsting for this light. Proportionately as spiritual enlightenment was gained was I healed.
