Hearing Is a Spiritual Faculty

Mark's Gospel records the healing by Jesus of "one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech." It is related that the Master said, "Ephphatha, ... that is, Be opened;" and "straightway his ears were opened" (Mark 7:34, 35). It was his understanding of the fact that hearing is really a spiritual faculty, and therefore indestructible, that enabled Jesus to restore to this man and to others what is humanly considered to be a normal ability to hear.

In the present time, through the ministrations of Christian Science, many have been healed of what appeared to be partial or complete deafness. Such healings have resulted from Christian Science treatment, from reading and studying Christian Science literature, from attending Christian Science church services, and from listening to public lectures on Christian Science. And willingness to listen attentively is often an aid in bringing about, through Christian Science, the healing of deafness.

Mortals are sometimes prone to listen more to their own thoughts than to what is being said to them by others. Such inattentiveness might prevent one from hearing and being receptive of the truth that would bring freedom from deafness or hardness of hearing. It was in response to the verbal command of Jesus that the ears of the man, referred to above, were opened. And the prophet Isaiah, speaking in the name of God, said, "Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live" (Isaiah 55:3). We should be more willing to listen to the "still small voice" of Truth. Then we should be less likely to believe the deceitful and enslaving arguments of error.
