For a number of years Christian Science has been my help, comfort, and the basis for my standpoint of living.
As a child and young woman there was hardly a day when I did not have a sick headache or was not recovering from one. I could never enjoy games or social activities as other young people did, without the fear of being ill. Usually my fears were apparently justified.
I was reared in an atmosphere of debate along economic and religious lines. The elders of the family dissected and discussed all forms of religion until even my belief in the existence of God was shattered. The old orthodox concepts were utterly destroyed, and I was left with nothing on which to base my faith. This made me very unhappy and affected my health. Because it was thought that it would be beneficial for me, I was sent to study art in an adjoining city. I lived with a practitioner of Christian Science, who lent me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but I did not at that time grasp its meaning. Later, at a great crisis in my life, its spiritual import dawned on me so clearly that all my questions were answered. I found the God which human argument had tried to take away from me, the God who is Life and Love, and whose existence is a demonstrable fact. Ever since, I have endeavored to apply the truth learned in Christian Science to all the conditions which arise in daily life, and invariably it has saved and healed me. The sick headaches are long since a thing of the past, and many other difficulties have disappeared, including pneumonia, which was gone in a few days. During a severe epidemic of influenza I took care of a number of persons who were ill with it, and was suddenly stricken myself. I telephoned a practitioner for help. In reply he said, "It is impossible that is should touch you." This statement was given with such firmness and confidence in Truth that this realization came at once—that no evil could touch me because God, good, alone had power and presence and sickness was only an illusion. In half an hour all symptoms had completely vanished.
