Christian Science has proved a very definite and practical religion to me for the last twenty-one years. During the whole of that period I have relied entirely upon the truth, as given in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. This truth never fails to meet my every need, be it spiritual, material, or mental.
Many times I have proved the healing power of the truth which makes men free. I have seen a broken arm set without aid from materia medica, fibroid growths relegated to their native nothingness, and congestion of the lungs healed. In fact, most of the ills to which flesh is supposedly heir, I have seen entirely eliminated by the application of this most wonderful truth.
The following details of a comparatively recent healing may prove helpful. Early in January, 1935, whilst working in my garden I stumbled over the garden hose and was thrown violently to the ground, hurting myself so severely that I lost consciousness. Upon recovering possession of my senses I endeavored to know that in Mind, God, man is unhurt, but despite this affirmation I was unable to rise from the ground. Eventually I was able to attract the attention of members of my household and was carried to the house. Immediately, a fellow student of Christian Science was asked to assist me in declaring the truth, and eventually intense agony was alleviated through the earnest and faithful work done on my behalf. The leg was badly swollen and discolored, and for eight weeks I was unable to put my foot to the ground, but I clung steadfastly to the thought that a child of God cannot be in bondage to any false claim. The error was still manifest, and I therefore decided to have the foot and ankle X-rayed, so as to ascertain what was hindering the manifestation of Truth. The surgeon who photographed the injured limb stated that three bones had been broken in the ankle, two had set perfectly, but the third had knitted together in a wrong position, and he asserted that unless the ankle was broken again and the bone reset, I should never be able to walk. He also reported that the ligaments had been badly torn and were still twisted.
