The Coming of the Messiah
[Original article in German]
Christendom celebrates Christmas in memory of the birth of Christ Jesus, in memory of the coming of the Messiah, or Saviour. Universal salvation, however, has not been assured through the mere fact that the human Jesus was born to the world. Salvation, as Christian Scientists comprehend it, comes only with the understanding of the Christ as the spiritual idea of God, the idea which Christ Jesus demonstrated. The Christ-idea can be fully understood by us only as we follow explicitly all the commands of the Master.
Mankind needs salvation from the ills of mortal existence as much today as nineteen centuries ago. "Men and women of all climes and races are still in bondage to material sense, ignorant how to obtain their freedom," says Mary Baker Eddy on page 225 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Even now the great majority of people are still ignorant as to how to escape the bondage of sin, sensuality, suffering, and fear. How grateful we can be, therefore, to the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, that in Christian Science she has given us practical instructions on how to meet the demands of our Master, Christ Jesus, and that she has thereby shown us the way to attain the Christ-consciousness, which alone brings salvation.
Again, on page 225 of Science and Health we read, "Love is the liberator;" and in another passage on the same page, "Truth makes man free." Our Master said, "If ye continue in my word, ... ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." In proportion as the truth of divine being dawns upon the understanding, a sense of universal, all-embracing Love is inevitably awakened; and likewise, impersonal love leads to the discernment of Truth. With this spiritual understanding comes deliverance from sinful propensities, faults of character, sickness, suffering, anxiety, fear, lack, and limitation. To this saving comprehension of the truth about God and man Christian Science lovingly leads us.
