My young sister was stricken with an illness which developed into a mental state in which she almost completely lost control of speech and action, seeming to be living in a trance or dream. My parents, not knowing anything about Christian Science, and not knowing at the time what the ailment was, called in a physician. This physician gave up the case after three days, saying he could do nothing for her, but would take her to a specialist in another city who could help her, if anyone could. She was put into a private hospital, where she stayed for four weeks. The specialist then told us that he had done what he could, and that we had better make arrangements to take care of her in a less expensive hospital, as our means were getting rather limited and the treatments would take a long time.
When I received this word, the thought came to me that we should try Christian Science, although I knew very little about it. I called a practitioner, who agreed to take up the work of gaining my sister's release from the hospital, so that we might bring her to my home, where she could have Christian Science treatment. In another two weeks the release was reluctantly given by her physician, who advised us against trying to care for her in a private home.
We brought her to my home on a Sunday, and by the following Saturday she was able to take a drive down town. In two weeks she attended the church services. When she came to us she weighed eighty-five pounds. She gained ten pounds the first two weeks; altogether she gained twenty-nine and a half pounds.
