How to Serve

How shall I best serve needs of human kind?
How can I show my love to each I meet?
Is there no way to ease the daily grind?
No way to render bitter into sweet?
Can I no means employ
To turn grief into joy?

Oh, for the gift to dry the burning tear,
To lighten sorrow's heavy load; beguile
The weary-hearted, torn by doubt and fear,
And bring, to lips down-curving long, a smile!
May not this be my part,
To heal the sore of heart?

Father in heaven, hear my humble prayer;
Give me sure understanding of Thy grace,
Grant me the courage, all for right to dare,
Strength to bring others to Thy holy place!
Bring to Thy fountain's brink,
Deep of Thy love to drink.
