Since first becoming acquainted with Christian Science...

Since first becoming acquainted with Christian Science some twenty-four years ago, I have always been deeply grateful for its teaching. I have found it to be the promised Comforter, and it has been to me a "wellspring of life" throughout the years.

Many and varied are the difficulties which have been met and overcome through the understanding of God and His omnipresence and omnipotence as revealed in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. My first big healing was a beautiful experience in the overcoming of a condition of chronic gastritis, combined with severe depression and nerves, which took place within thirty-six hours after my seeing a Christian Science practitioner and having treatment. This was a case when the darkest hour preceded the dawn. I thought I had missed the way in Christian Science, when a well of gratitude arose in me for my mother's love and her constant care. This was the healing, moral and spiritual; for with these thoughts the physical trouble began to leave me there and then, and after a talk at home, the next morning I was free and uplifted to happiness and peace, and for quite a time afterward seemed to walk on air, inwardly praising God for His wonderful goodness. There is no doubt that this was the Christ-healing; and my mother was greatly helped at the same time, sharing my joy as well as being relieved of chronic physical troubles. Since that time I have had many uplifted periods of joy and inspiration, as well as times of difficulty and trial, and I have never ceased, after that proof of its wonderful power, to acknowledge Christian Science as the greatest thing in the world.

One aspect of Christian Science for which I have always been particularly grateful is its protecting and sustaining power, grateful that many physical ills which might have become serious problems have been warded off by prompt and persistent holding to Truth. The necessity for this was taught by experience, and a healing of boils on my body took place after I had learned to put into practice the precept embodied in the following statement from the textbook (p. 395): "It is mental quackery to make disease a reality—to hold it as something seen and felt—and then to attempt its cure through Mind." Another statement from Science and Health which helped me very much after a while, when some minor complaints seemed slow to remove, was (p. 113), "The vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love." Some of the ailments which were long in the overcoming were very irritating hemorrhoids, headaches, and eyestrain. At other times ills of various types, such as rheumatic aches, influenza, and pains of different kinds, have been readily overcome and healed.
