Our Daily Bread

[Original article in German]

One of the main reasons why Christian Science has spread so rapidly in a comparatively short time is without doubt the fact that its literature flows like a continuous stream of living water to enlighten and refresh confused and suffering humanity.

Jesus said, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." Our wise and revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, saw mankind's need, and this undoubtedly caused her to record the revelation of Christian Science and to establish the Christian Science organization and its various activities. All men are thus given a dependable means of protecting themselves against their troubles, large and small, against sin, sickness, lack, and death. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 17) Mrs. Eddy interprets the petition in the Lord's Prayer, "Give us this day our daily bread" as, "Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections."

Why do Christian Scientists all over the world need this literature for their spiritual nourishment? Because, along with the Bible, it helps them to realize that man is not material, but spiritual. When we accept this statement of our real being, it is then necessary for us to partake of daily spiritual nourishment. If we did not feed our consciousness with regular spiritual food, that is, with good, right thoughts, our thinking would be material and erroneous.
