A clergyman sums up his attitude towards "miraculous healings" and the power of mind over so-called matter with the words: "The cures, whether at Lourdes or in Mongolia, are wrought by suggestion; but it is essential to suggest to the patient that there has been no suggestion. This the Christian Science healers know well." Christian Science repudiates the use of suggestion or the power of one human mind over another. Its healings are in answer to scientific prayer, which is a right understanding of the absolute perfection of God and His creation, Principle and its idea.

The Bible, which is the basis of all Christian doctrine, enshrines the following definite statement by the master Metaphysician, Christ Jesus: "And these signs shall follow them that believe ... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." That statement and promise extends to all mankind and to all ages. Every Christian denomination makes provision in its church services for prayer for the recovery of those who are afflicted "in mind, body, or estate." On page 218 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy asks very pertinently: "Why pray for the recovery of the sick, if you are without faith in God's willingness and ability to heal them? If you do believe in God, why do you substitute drugs for the Almighty's power, and employ means which lead only into material ways of obtaining help, instead of turning in time of need to God, divine Love, who is an ever-present help?"
