It is with deep humility that I give the following testimony because, after I received such a proof of God's love, many years passed before I availed myself of the privilege of membership in a local church and in The Mother Church.
When my son was seven years old we were boarding with a family in Canada. The boy developed a bad cough and a high fever. The doctor was called late in the afternoon; he said at once, "This child has bronchial pneumonia and you must send him to the hospital." To my objections he reasoned: "But you are only boarding here. You have no facilities for nursing, no help. You are not strong enough to care for him alone. He will be delirious tonight." The doctor then went to the telephone and returned to tell me that I could not put the boy in the hospital until the next day, as there was no spare bed. At this a great feeling of thankfulness filled me.
Although I knew little of Christian Science, I believed in the protecting power of Love; and when the doctor left I telephoned to a practitioner, who had treated the boy before, appealing again for help. That night I lay on the bed by the child, and patted him gently and sang hymns to him. The boy wandered a little mentally between one and two o'clock, but I did not rise. I continued to sing, softly; and presently we both slept.
