The Apostle Paul, in his epistle to the Romans, besought...
The Apostle Paul, in his epistle to the Romans, besought the brethren that they be transformed by the renewing of the mind. The transforming and renewing effect on the human mind of the application of the truth as taught in Christian Science has been proved in my experience.
Ten years ago I wrote to a Christian Science practitioner asking whether it was possible for God to come into my consciousness. In reply I received a letter quoting the following passage from "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mary Baker Eddy, page 208: "God is All, and by virtue of this nature and allness He is cognizant only of good. Like a legislative bill that governs millions of mortals whom the legislators know not, the universal law of God has no knowledge of evil, and enters unconsciously the human heart and governs it." On the morning when I read the above passage and also the article in which it occurs, entitled "Thy Will be Done," my whole consciousness and outlook were changed; a transformation was begun which has continued through the years. A purity suffused my being; I have never wanted to smoke since then; an irritation in the throat which had troubled me for some time disappeared; it was the turning point of years. Shortly before that time I had been living in a doctor's house in the country, going for walks with a male nurse; soon I was free, enjoying the Alps.
Another benefit received was natural sleep; how thankful I was and am for this! "For so he giveth his beloved sleep." A bottle containing sleeping medicine which I had been taking was thrown away. I returned to my research work on the electro-physiology of plants, and in the light of Christian Science and through prayer was led to experimental results and conclusions more clear and interesting than ever before, the phenomena reducing themselves by beautiful degrees from confusion to simplicity, and falling naturally into their place among the cosmic symbols glorifying God. "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork."
