God Is So Near

When clouds of sorrow dim the morning sun,
When there is no reward, no victory won,
No earthly comfort for the falling tear,
How sweet the consciousness that God is near!

For He is closer than the singing bird
That flutters past our doorway. He is heard
Above the roar of wars: divinely near
The waiting thought, and infinitely dear.

And we may know His tender presence still,
Though all earth's hopes should fade—though human will
Should lead us through a wilderness of fear,
For God is surely infinitely near.
