Seven years ago, when "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
Seven years ago, when "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was procured for me by a dear friend, I had been in bed for seven months with tuberculosis of the lungs and had given up hope of ever taking my place again in the affairs of my family. I had no faith whatever that this Science would heal me but asked for it simply to please a sister. Two of my small children had been sent away to be cared for by relatives. Inasmuch as I had had this ailment before, the fear that took possession of me can never be imagined by one not placed in the same circumstances. I had not slept well for months, and was taking two different kinds of sleeping medicine in the hope of gaining a little rest, but to no avail. Everything got blacker and blacker, but as soon as I started reading Science and Health the light began to break, so that after the first day's reading—which included only the Preface and the first two chapters—I slept from nine in the evening until five in the morning without awaking or being interrupted by the cough that had held me in bondage for over sixteen years. I was in bed in the open air, and the fear of taking cold used to influence my rest; but when I read this wonderful book I thought that if it was true—and I was thoroughly satisfied that it was—I could no more take cold than the bed, for my body was just as material and sensationless. Immediately my temperature began to fall, and in a very few days I went with my husband on a trip, walked several miles in the hot sun, and returned home in the late afternoon in time for the four-thirty reading of temperature. I was not in the least surprised to find the thermometer registered normal, for I knew that I had been healed. This healing took place simply through the reading of the textbook. I had been running a temperature all the time when lying quiet in bed all day, as four physicians had said I must not even move an arm. In a large home with three small children, I have since been performing all my household duties, including all the laundry work, and have enjoyed better health than ever before.
I had been reading for only a few days when I realized that I must own a copy of Science and Health, and immediately ordered two, in order to share my new-found joy with others. Medicine was never touched after I started reading.
I wish to state my experience in proving that God supplies our needs. My husband had been out of employment for five months and we had many debts, including doctors' bills; we had friends who were anxious to lend us the money to meet these bills, but I knew that this could be handled in Science and asked a practitioner for help, with the result that my husband went to work. At least two hundred were in the employment office waiting with him, and only two were hired out of this group. About a month after this every man in the department was laid off, but my husband was transferred to a department where only four men were kept working. God certainly takes care of His children when they trust Him and know that He is their only substance and supply. Some time later a man stopped and asked my husband if he would consider a position in another town, and he told him he would think it over that night. I went to bed knowing that God guides; and the next day we learned that my husband had been laid off where he was employed, but here was a position waiting, proving that "before they call, I will answer."
