True Exercises
[Written Especially for Young People]
The recent Olympic games showed how habitual training in a given direction may lead to skill, and to eventual mastery in certain lines of endeavor.
What the spectators at the stadium saw was an aggregation of human beings, able to run, jump, and hurl heavy weights with grace, speed, and precision. They did not, perhaps, realize what a long period of patient, persistent practice, wisely directed, had preceded their public performances.
Each contestant in the athletic events measured his performance against the highest established record in his given field, trying to approach it or better it.
