The Power of the Holy Ghost

In the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 588) Mrs. Eddy defines "Holy Ghost" as "Divine Science; the development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love." The Holy Ghost, or divine Science, reveals the eternality of good. This definition lifts human thought above the ghosts of material belief and finity. "Ghost" is defined (ibid., p. 587) as "an illusion; a belief that mind is outlined and limited; a supposition that spirit is finite." The Holy Ghost stands for eternal good and "ghost" for material finity.

Scriptural references to the Holy Ghost point to inspiration, illumination, support. By utilizing spiritual power when faced with the many ghosts of human fear and discord, one knows how to set about solving his human problems. By acquiring a scientific understanding of the one perfect spiritual creation one is enabled to rise above the inharmony of material sense. The error that is mentally discarded because Truth has exposed its falsity ceases to appall or attract one.

Greater spirituality is humanity's most urgent need. Throughout the centuries men have struggled against their troubles as though they were unavoidable and insurmountable. They have fought evil with its own weapons instead of with the sword of Truth. In many cases devoutly-minded individuals, lacking spiritual understanding, have believed that suffering must be endured in accord with the will of God. But Christ Jesus healed the sick in accord with the will of God. Sin and disease are contrary to the divine will and the divine nature. To the ghost of materiality, and not to the divine will, must be attributed all the suffering and limitation endured by humanity. The way of dominion over discord is through spiritual understanding.
