Christian Science found me when I was in the depths of...
Christian Science found me when I was in the depths of despair. The aunt who had reared me was dying, and I had no religious faith to hold to, having given up orthodoxy while still in my teens. A Christian Science practitioner came to our home and talked with me, and when she left I had grasped one simple truth of Christian Science. It was this: A God who had the power and intelligence to create a universe certainly could maintain His creation. I clung to this through all chaos and fear about me, through the determined and angry opposition of two members of the house hold, and the disgust of the attending physician; and when my aunt passed on, I was able, as the result of my stand and the faithful work of the practitioner, to rise above grief into the consciousness that there is no death. I saw definitely and conclusively that my aunt was continuing her life where she had left off here, learning more spiritual wisdom and happiness day by day.
I am more grateful than I can express for this healing. In the years between that time and the present, Christian Science has met all my needs, and they have been many. The truth that God, infinite good, is the only source of supply has brought me food, shelter, and employment, when I seemed financially stranded. The knowledge of God as the only presence and power has healed me instantaneously of very severe colds, which, before I knew of Christian Science, often lasted for months at a time. The work of a practitioner fiften hundred miles away brought me out of a dangerous attack of influenza in three days. I was a young student when this healing took place and was visiting in a town eight thousand feet above sea level, where the belief is that pneumonia is nearly always fatal. I seemed to be going rapidly into pneumonia, and as my relatives were not Scientists they were extremely frightened and urged me with tears to have a physician. However, I took my stand for Truth, and twenty minutes after the practitioner had been called, the fever, which had risen above 105 degrees, had gone down to 101; and soon I had completely recovered.
I look back gratefully upon all the healings which have been wrought by Christian Science, but what I most rejoice over is a radical change in myself. This is due to the fact that Christian Science gave me a God I could believe in; that it showed me Jesus as a man who lived to demonstrate God's power; and that it made plain to me how I, too, might prove the power of God, in proportion to my willingness to follow the Christ. This understanding I have found to be the "pearl of great price," through which I have been able to take possession of a troublesome temper, to overcome to a noticeable extent a so-called artistic temperament, with its claim of an implusive, dreamy, vacillating nature, and to conquer pride of intellect and intolerance. The greatest happiness which has ever come to me is learning to love—to give rather than get.
