Fetters Fall

Long years ago, when Christliness was proved
By Jesus, who all sin and ill removed,
And set the captive free, we read that he
One day was walking in his ministry
Beside Bethesda's pool. Here lay
A man, with palsy's imagery chained
For eight and thirty years, till it had drained
All strength, and naught but hopelessness remained.

"Take up thy bed and walk," the Master said.
At this command the futile shadows fled,
And quickly whole the man was made, and walked,
His bed a burden light that he could bear,
Since sin was not, e'en healed all darkling fear.

Now comes to us anew the same Christ-call:
Forsake whereon you lie, sin large or small,
And lean on God alone, for He
Can lift and bear you up, sustainingly.
