With a sincere and deep sense of gratitude for the unfailing evidence of the efficacy of Christian Science, covering a period of nearly twenty-five years, I am glad to give this testimony.
I did not come to the study of Christian Science for a physical healing for myself or my family, but the urge to look into it came about through my contact with two individuals who had been brought up in Christian Science homes, each of whom constantly expressed so much joy, cheer, happiness, and good will towards his fellow man in daily living that I felt they must have something of which I was ignorant. Since there was no urgent need from a physical standpoint, my progress in the study of Christian Science seemed slow, although later I realized there were many other conditions which needed healing.
Early in my experience as a student, the following incident gave me unmistakable proof of the protection divine Love is ever affording its children. I was living in a small town and had made a trip to a larger city to meet a member of my family. Soon after my arrival we were invited to take a ride with an acquaintance who had just purchased a new car. As soon as I stepped into the car, I realized that the owner and driver of the car was under the influence of liquor, and my first impulse was to refuse to continue the ride. I was very unhappy to begin what was to have been a pleasure trip with this kind of start. Words did not come to me, however, and we were soon speeding along the highway. The night was beautiful, and as I looked out of the car window, I soon recovered from the feeling of annoyance which at first had almost overwhelmed me. The beauty of the starry heavens, with an appreciation of and a deep gratitude for the wonders of God's handiwork, came into my thought, replacing the resentment and criticism which I had at first felt.
