The Golden Rule and Business

In his Sermon on the Mount, as recorded by Matthew, Christ Jesus included an injunction which has since been designated the Golden Rule: "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets." This heavenly precept, fittingly called golden, is so plainly stated by the master Christian as to leave no misconception regarding its requirements.

This loving counsel affords ample opportunities in business, as well as in all other departments of human experience, for actions consonant with Jesus' teachings. Indeed, the value of the rule lies in its practical and universal applicability. Christ Jesus not only presented an admonition which Christian business men and women may accept, but one which they are to practice. It is essential, however, scientifically to understand what we would have done to us if we are to give a like token in our relations with others.

It remained for Christian Science, discovered through divine revelation by Mary Baker Eddy, to present the scientific means by which the treasures of the Golden Rule may be utilized in business and elsewhere. By the spiritual modes made available through the Science of Christianity, the provisions of the rule become capable of practical performance. Mrs. Eddy epitomizes the very essence of Jesus' words in the statement contained in her book "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 4), "When, by losing his faith in matter and sin, one finds the spirit of Truth, then he practises the Golden Rule spontaneously; and obedience to this rule spiritualizes man, for the world's nolens volens cannot enthrall it."
