True Science

[Written Especially for Young People]

One of the prevalent problems confronting young Christian Scientists is the correct attitude to take towards the physical sciences. The majority of schools today make at least one science course compulsory. Some students of Christian Science face this situation with a great sense of fear that they will be unable to master a subject so foreign to all they have learned in Christian Science, and with the apprehension, too often entertained by parents, that their understanding of the truth may be shaken by this presentation of data concerning mankind and the material universe. Neither of these fears need trouble the student, however. As he starts with a clear mental attitude regarding this course of study, a year of harmonious work is assured him.

The student best prepares himself by first establishing his concept of the real man and the spiritual universe. Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 123, 124), "Christian Science is pre-eminently scientific, being based on Truth, the Principle of all science." Christian Science teaches that the one spiritual universe is the creation of God, and that this universe "consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities" (ibid., p. 503). This universe of spiritual ideas does not come under any so-called laws of electricity, temperature, magnetic or molecular attraction, erosion or evolution, which are all man-made theories, subject to change and disappearance.

In the chapter in Science and Health entitled "Genesis," our Leader gives us valuable guidance in understanding the elements and structure of the spiritual universe. She takes up the subjects of astronomy, geology, physics, chemistry, biology, anatomy, and physiology, and gives us the spiritual fact for each counterfeit claim. A careful study of these pages gives the student a firm foundation in spiritual truths, a yardstick with which to gauge the illogical, hypothetical, and unsubstantial material theories presented by the physical sciences.
