While still a member of another church, though no longer...
While still a member of another church, though no longer active in its work, I had been reading the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly daily for more than a year, and depending on Christian Science for healing for almost as long. The overturning of our car and consequent serious injuries, including a dislocation of the hip, compelled me to take my stand. At the insistence of my husband the family physician was called, who said that as soon as it was possible to move me, he would take me to the hospital and with use of the X ray ascertain the extent of my injuries. No medicines were prescribed. Later a Christian Science practitioner was called, and before morning I was able to rest and to get some sleep.
After the doctor's second visit my decision was made. At my request my son, who is a Christian Scientist, informed the doctor that I would depend on Christian Science for healing. A Science nurse was then called. Very soon the hip bone slipped back into the socket without pain, and in a week I was able to sit up in a chair. Progress was somewhat slow, but in five weeks I was doing the work for a family of four, and never has there been the slightest aftereffect from the injury.
Another outstanding experience was the healing of mushroom poisoning. The illness came on about midnight, and from its nature I knew what it was. Immediately came to me the words of Jesus recorded in the last chapter of Mark's Gospel: "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them." I knew that this promise was for me; that I could not be harmed by any so-called "deadly thing." At the same time I recalled what Mrs. Eddy has written in Science and Health (pp. 380, 381): "Every law of matter or the body, supposed to govern man, is rendered null and void by the law of Life, God." Knowing God's law to be omnipresent and ever active, I rested on these promises without fear, and by six o'clock in the morning the violent phases of the illness were over. At six-thirty I arose, read the Lesson, and prepared breakfast for my husband. No one in the family had known that I was ill.
